Idle Labor/Busy Humor

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation." - (Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor)

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
....The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday Sept. 5, 1882. Two years later in 1884, it was officially declared to be celebrated as we know it today, on the first Monday of September.

Labor Day! How ironic is it that a holiday dedicated to the celebration of labor would become a day that many of us will do nothing? How neat is it that even those who don't work get to celebrate also? I guess you could say that "Labor Day" is a classic example of an oxymoron.

Overheard in an Office

The Boss: Why haven't you kept me up to date on that new account?
Employee: I've sent you 5 e-mails on it.
The Boss: I haven't had time to read my e-mail. There's too many of them. When you send important e-mails to me, call me to let me know to check my e-mail.
Employee: Okay, will do!
The Boss: But text me first to let me know it's an important call.

Casbah Concessions

It should come as no surprise to us that labor laws are different in other countries and around the world. What about decency, such as the relationship between doctors and patients?

This cartoon at the left by Sokol, whose cartoons are a regular feature in Playboy Magazine, gave me a chuckle. It made me wonder about what the doctor-female protocol may be in the Muslim countries.

The caption reads: "Everything off?"

It just struck me funny to think that a Muslim woman might feel more comfortable completely disrobing before her doctor and yet be hesitant to reveal her face to him.

Have you ever wondered what all those job evaluation comments on your performance reviews really mean?
